The week prior to Christmas, Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann hosted a special Mass and dinner for parents of students awarded scholarships from the Catholic Education Foundation.
Thought to be one of the largest dinner’s to date, this year’s dinner on December 18 included parents from eight CEF schools across northeast Kansas. While each family’s background differed, they were united in their gratitude for the chance to send their children to safe, family-focused schools where they could grow academically and in their faith.
“Our kids are strong from what they learn every day,” said Karla Inestroza, whose child attends Holy Cross Catholic School in Overland Park. “When I have a bad day, my daughter comes in and she says, ‘Mom, just trust to God; he has control of everything.’”
William and Patricia Brewer shared the motivation behind their decision to move their children to St. Patrick Catholic School in Kansas City, KS this fall and the positive impact they’ve witnessed.
“As a faith-based household, we’ve always raised our children on loving God and having a relationship with Jesus Christ,” said William Brewer. “And to be able to see them thrive academically and spiritually as well, has been a blessing.
“We want to say thank you, CEF.”
The evening included a special Mass in the chapel at the Archbishop’s residence.
Over dinner, many families shared that while CEF scholarships are a great help, they must still make sacrifices to see that their children receive a Catholic education - sacrifices they are willing to make.
“I don’t care how much we have to work,” said Teresa Espinoza, whose children attend Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School in Kansas City, KS. “A lot of people tell me it’s expensive, you can’t afford it. But to me, the point is faith.
“Thank you so much for helping us teach our children the way to get Jesus in their hearts.”
As parents shared their struggles, they also thanked CEF for helping families who otherwise would not be able to send their children to Catholic school.
“The work you do is equally — if not more — meaningful,” said RJ Gildea, CEF board chair. “And we are just very proud and honored to be able to walk alongside you every day.”
For the 2023-2024 school year, nearly 1,800 students throughout northeast Kansas are attending K-12 Catholic schools with financial support from CEF.
Held at the Archbishop's residence, dinner guests included parents from eight CEF schools across northeast Kansas, CEF Board Chair RJ Gildea, and CEF Executive Director Vincent Anch.
In his closing prayer, Archbishop Naumann emphasized the importance of making Catholic schools financially accessible and thanked the foundation, board, and donors, assuring parents of the church's love and support for their families.
“They believe in you and your families,” said the Archbishop, “and they want the best for your children, just like you do.”
