Tax Credits for Individuals

Donate to CEF and get a 75% state tax credit.*

Your qualified donation* to the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF) will provide you with a 75% Kansas state income tax credit, lowering the amount of your state tax liability 75 cents on the dollar.

You can reduce or eliminate your Kansas state income tax liability (up to $500,000). These state income tax credits can be carried forward into future years and do not expire (tax credits are not transferrable).

How can I participate in the tax credit program?

All qualified* Kansas taxpayers are eligible, including individuals, corporations, pass-through entities (such as S-corps) and sole proprietorships. Banks that pay privilege taxes and insurance companies that pay premium taxes are also eligible.

*Certain donation qualifications exist; please contact CEF's Tax Credit Office for details.

What will my gift really cost me?

You should consult with your tax advisor about your own tax liabilities, but here are a few example scenarios to consider and share with your advisor. The sample illustrations below demonstrate, at a general level, the potential impact of individual donations from $7,500 to $100,000.

Individual Taxpayer Assumptions:

• The contribution qualifies for a 75% Kansas state income tax credit.
• The taxpayer is able to fully utilize the credit in the current year.
• The taxpayer has sufficient itemized deductions to exceed the standard deduction of $24,400
for married filing joint individual taxpayers in 2023
• The individual’s state and local tax deduction exceeds $10,000 and therefore the taxpayer is not
eligible to deduct any additional amount of the donation as a state or local tax deduction.

*Note: There are a number of taxpayer-specific factors that could impact these results. The Catholic Education Foundation does not provide tax, legal or accounting advice. Any illustrative material is prepared for information purposes only. Potential donors should consult their own tax, legal and accounting advisors.

Many of our donors are recouping about 80% of their original investment when considering all the tax advantages of the CEF tax credits. That is significantly greater than many other charitable donations.

How can I reserve my state tax credit?

The process to enroll is very simple. Contact the CEF Tax Credit team and we will provide the necessary forms to secure your tax credits. We will facilitate your tax credit application with the state of Kansas, and if credits are still available, you will receive a tax credit certificate to be used when you file your state tax return. By law, we must submit the application to the KS Dept. of Revenue on your behalf.

Consider donations of cash, stocks, bonds, property, life insurance, IRA distributions or other investments.

You may apply more than once for credits during the year, but the total value of your credits may not exceed $500,000. Tax credits can only be issued for the tax year in which the contributions are made, so 2023 tax credits must be completed by Dec. 31, 2023.

2023 Kansas Income Tax Credits are available for a limited time. Please contact Vincent Anch, CEF Executive Director, at [email protected] or call (913) 647-0383.

How will our contribution help our communities?

Your donation will be used to provide scholarships to eligible low-income children to attend K-12 Catholic schools. Without these CEF scholarships, these students’ families would not have access to a quality, values-based, Christ-centered education.

In addition to the tax advantages of your contribution, you’ll be investing in proven future workforce members for your community. Students who have been awarded these CEF scholarships graduate at a 100% rate, compared to 69% in their peers’ assigned neighborhood schools. A recent Pew Research study concluded that Catholic school students are also more likely to vote and volunteer in their communities, because they are taught to be ethical and productive members of society.

CEF is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and a state-approved scholarship granting organization. This year, we awarded more than 300 scholarships through our Tax Credit scholarship program and more than 1,700 overall. Through all of our scholarship programs, CEF is saving the state of Kansas more than $24 million per year in educational expenses.

The Catholic Education Foundation is the only Archdiocesan charitable organization offering Kansas state income tax credits.
