CEF Kids Are Choosing Their Own Adventures

Remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books we used to read as kids.

At the bottom of the page, when faced with some big decision, we decide if we want to do this thing or that. We turn to the page number assigned to our choice and our adventure continues.

Or it ends, and we flip back to the last page read and pick the other answer because we’re not ready to be done reading.

Admit it. You did it. I did, too.

(And right now, you are smiling and thinking about those books wondering how on earth I’ll tie this to a guest blog entry for CEF; Michael Morrisey, on the other hand, is thinking ‘Dubill! Get to the point!”)

Here’s my point.

I kind of think CEF’s work is like a Choose Your Own Adventure book. The scholarships provided to these families allow for choices – choices they may not otherwise have. It’s a chance to turn back to the last page, and choose a different option because they AREN’T! DONE! READING!

The majority of families receiving assistance through CEF make less than $24,000 a year. Statistics are stacked against kids from low income families. Their story is practically written. They aren’t supposed to go college. They aren’t supposed to end up running companies. But given the chance, they just might.

Kids on CEF scholarships go on to college at a rate of 98.7%. They are choosing their own adventures.

When you choose to donate to CEF (of which 100% goes directly to scholarships, by the way) you are providing these moms and dads – THESE KIDS - the chance to turn back the pages, and choose a different adventure than what might have been in the original pages. One that helps them defy odds. One that helps them one day stand on a stage and talk about their successes.

When you choose to help fund a CEF scholarship you’re also helping these children do perhaps the most important thing they’ll do in their lifetime. These children are growing their relationship with God, and sometimes meeting Him for the first time.

An anonymous family has made an incredible commitment to help families who want a Catholic education for their children. The family has made a Fund-A-Child pledge and will match every dollar given, up to $215,000. The average CEF scholarship is $850. If every dollar donated is matched, that’s enough to provide 505 children with scholarships. Wouldn’t that be AWESOME!
