Students from Christ the King Catholic School in Kansas City, Kansas, strike a masked pose during recess.

It’s been a year unlike any other. But while the past nine months have brought new challenges to many of the students we serve, they've also brought new perspective to the supporters who make CEF scholarships possible.

A scholarship from the Catholic Education Foundation's Guardian Angel Fund is allowing a student to stay in his CEF school after his foster care placement changed, requiring him to move to a new home midway through the school year. Recognizing the challenges of changing homes and schools abruptly, the foster care family opted to keep him in his CEF school, but required scholarship assistance to do so.

Shortly after his mother received a diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor and was no longer able to work, a CEF student received a Guardian Angel Scholarship that allowed him to continue his Catholic education at a CEF-supported school despite his family's difficulties in paying tuition. In the scholarship application, the school principal wrote, "The parents are active in the school and parish and have been consistent volunteers. We feel it would benefit the student and the entire family to provide a stable school environment during this time of unknown circumstances."

Scholarship support from the Guardian Angel Fund recently allowed three students to remain at their CEF-supported school after their mother lost her job, and their father had to reduce his work hours due to a newly-diagnosed medical condition. "The kids are great students and contribute to our school," wrote their principal in the scholarship allocation. "(Mom) is a very active parent at our school. She is always ready to volunteer her time and talents."

Put Catholic education within reach of every student.
