With the combination of the return of Arctic temperatures this week and the evening commute now occurring in near total darkness, it isn’t so hard to believe that the Christmas season is right around the corner. Schedules are filling, to-do lists are seemingly endless, and between work, school, and well, life, it can be only too easy to focus inward on ourselves, to the detriment of others in need.
But this Saturday, November 15th, in the calm before the storm of Christmas parties, school programs, and family dinners, the women of Mothers of Young Children at Curé of Ars Catholic Church will host the 12th Annual Gift Gallery, a one-day fundraising event that provides an opportunity for others to give back simply by giving gifts. This one-of-a-kind shopping extravaganza brings together over 40 artisans and vendors selling unique items that are perfect gifts for family and friends (and perhaps yourself), where all proceeds, including 20% of every dollar spent at the event, are given to local children’s and family charities and scholarship funds—this has amounted to more than $150,000 in donations over the past 11 years!
One such organization that Gift Gallery is proud to support is the Catholic Education Foundation. CEF provides scholarships for students living in poverty allowing them to attend Catholic schools located throughout Northeast Kansas. This year more than 1,400 students will receive scholarships totaling more than $1.2 million. Allowing students to attend Catholic schools increases their chances of graduating High School by 28%. They are also attending college in much greater percentages compared to their peers in public schools (93.5% vs. 33%).
