Catholic Education Foundation Dinner Honors Two Civic Leaders KANSAS CITY, Kan.---The Catholic Education Foundation(CEF) honored two Kansas City civic leaders at the organization’s sixth annual Gaudeamus Dinner Saturday night, Oct. 18, 2008, at the Overland Park Convention Center. More than 700 guests attended this fundraiser for scholarships. Honorees included M. Esther White and Bernard A. Zarda. They were honored for their contributions to Catholic education to include the under-resourced, inner-city and rural Kansas Catholic schools served by CEF. CEF offered one auction item at the event; dinner hosted by Archbishop Naumann with Archbishop Emeritus Keleher and Abbot Barnabus for four couples. The item was purchased for $10,000.
The Catholic Education Foundation provides scholarships for needy families in Northeast Kansas, so they may attend Catholic schools sponsored by the Foundation. Over the last eleven years, CEF has provided more than $8 million in scholarships and financial assistance. . Gaudeamus is the Latin word for “let us rejoice.” Catholic Education Foundation Names School of ExcellenceKANSAS CITY, Kan.---The Catholic Education Foundation(CEF) named Mater Dei grade school, Topeka, its 2008 “School of Excellence” at the organization’s sixth annual Gaudeamus Dinner held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at the Overland Park Convention Center. More than 700 guests watched as Principal Andrea Hillebert accepted a check for $2500, a plaque and a school of excellence flag for the outside of the school.
The criteria used by CEF for making the selection of Mater Dei-- over the other 14 grade schools supported by the organization include: Catholicity, academic progress, resource management and stewardship.
After receiving her award, Principal Hillebert said, “Donors to CEF have no idea what their support means to us. Because of them, we are able to offer more needy students in our community faith formation with outstanding scholarship.”
There are 300 students currently enrolled in grades kindergarten through eighth. The school was formed in 2006 by combining the former Assumption and Holy Name Schools. Those schools date back to 1884.
